They made it safely out of the Shadow Lands and landed at the entrance to the Stronghold. They’d had a long day of flying, and it was the middle of the night when they landed, so they camped out under the stars and waited until sunrise.

Both of the dragons slept after their long journey, and Cora volunteered to take the first watch.

Rush leaned against the other rock, his ankles crossed. “I’m not tired.”

“That’s too bad because you need to rest.”

He rolled his eyes, and the action was visible in the starlight. “I’m good, Cora.”

“You nearly died.”

“Nearly?” he asked incredulously. “I did die.”

She stilled at the statement.

“But since Flare hung on, I didn’t exactly pass on.”

Every muscle in her body clenched. Her lungs even locked, no air passing in or out. It was a shock to the system, to know that as she kneeled over him, he really was beyond her reach.

“When you revived him, you revived me, another perk of being fused with a dragon.”

She dropped her gaze, overcome with emotion.

He studied her, releasing a quiet sigh. “I’m sorry, Cora. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“When I thought I lost you… I can’t even explain it.” She kept her eyes on the ground. “There was no purpose in going on…there was no King Lux and the dragons. I just… I didn’t even want to flee.” She could feel his stare hot on her face, feel him latch on to every word. “And you joke about it like it’s no big deal, brush it off like it’s just another day in the life.”

“Because it kinda is.”

She lifted her chin and met her gaze.

“The second I turned on my father, I knew how it would end. I just hoped that I could save the dragons before that moment arrived.” His fingers fidgeted together between his knees. “My life doesn’t have a lot of value, not anymore, not after the things I’ve done. So, I guess death doesn’t scare me.”

Her experience with death made it the most terrifying thing in the world. “It’s not scary for the one who goes. But for those they leave behind…it’s the greatest anguish any person could suffer.” Callon, the strongest person she’d ever met, had succumbed to tears more than once, had bent his spine in weakness, had fallen to his knees in despair. It ravaged his heart and severed his soul. “And you almost made me suffer that.”

He watched her, his face hard but his eyes soft.

“You can walk it off, but I can’t.”

His eyes dropped to his hands, and the nighttime sounds of the trees and wind surrounded them, swallowed them whole. He remained that way for a while before he lifted his chin and looked at her once more. “If you really feel this way…” His eyes shifted back and forth. “Then isn’t that enough?”

Her heart clenched painfully, and the breath she’d been holding was pushed out of her lungs.

“Isn’t that enough for us to be together?”

With her gaze averted, she said nothing.

When enough time passed, he pretended like he hadn’t asked the question at all.
